Why is it important to give a child a good Islamic name?

In Islam, naming a child is considered one of the earliest and most important acts of tarbiyah (upbringing). The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that on the Day of Judgment, people will be called by their own names and the names of their fathers, so parents are encouraged to choose good names (Sunan Abi Dawood). A name is not merely an identifier — many scholars note it can influence how a child perceives themselves and how others perceive them, making a meaningful, dignified name a form of du’a and hope for the child’s character and future.
