Maryam does not come from an Arabic triliteral root. Scholars trace it to the Hebrew/Aramaic Miryam, the name also borne by the sister of Musa (AS). The Quran fixes it in Arabic as a proper name: Maryam’s mother says, “I have named her Maryam” (Surah Āl ʿImrān 3:36).

Classical commentators gloss the name as ʿābida, a devout worshipper, which matches how the Quran describes her: devoted, truthful, and constantly in prayer. Other meanings, such as “beloved,” appear in some name books, but they are later proposals about a name of ancient origin and are not found in the Quran or the Sunnah. Yes. Maryam is the only woman named in the Quran, and her name occurs 34 times. Surah Maryam (Chapter 19) was revealed in Makkah and tells of her seclusion, the glad tidings of Isa (AS), and his birth, along with the response to those who falsely accused her. Surah Āl ʿImrān (Chapter 3) also covers her birth and upbringing, including that she was provided for by Allah in the sanctuary.

Surah At-Taḥrīm (66:12) also holds her up as an example for the believers, as one who guarded her chastity and believed in the words of her Lord. Giving this name to a daughter is a way of asking Allah to make her like Maryam in faith, modesty, and reliance on Him.

Maryam in the Sunnah

In authentic hadith recorded by al-Bukhari and Muslim, the Prophet ﷺ named Maryam bint ʿImran as the best of the women of her time, alongside Khadijah bint Khuwaylid (RA) as the best of the women of this ummah. The Sunnah also encourages Muslims to give their children good names, and many parents choose names of righteous people for that reason.

How to Pronounce Maryam

In Arabic it is MAR-yam, two syllables, with the stress on the first. In the United States you will also hear MAR-ee-um and MAIR-ee-um, which come from the English “Mary.”
