In India, the standard legal process to change one’s name involves three general steps: first, executing a notarized affidavit declaring the old and new name along with the reason for the change; second, publishing a public notice of the name change in a local newspaper (and often the Gazette of India for wider legal recognition); and third, using this documentation to update official records such as Aadhaar, PAN card, passport, and bank accounts. From a religious standpoint, there are no additional rituals required beyond the legal process — Islam simply asks that the new name have a good, permissible meaning, and that the person begins using it sincerely in daily life. Many reverts and those changing shirk-based names complete only the informal, personal adoption of the new name without pursuing the full legal process, which remains entirely optional.
