There is no strict requirement to use the classical Arabic ‘bin’ (son of) or ‘binti’ (daughter of) format specifically, but Islam places strong emphasis on the underlying principle: preserving true, accurate lineage. The Quran explicitly commands, ‘Call them by [the names of] their fathers; it is more just in the sight of Allah’ (Surah al-Ahzab, 33:5). Whether a family uses the classical bin/binti structure, a modern inherited surname, or a patronymic system common in various cultures, the religious principle being upheld is the same — a child’s parentage should be clear and not obscured or falsely attributed to someone other than their biological father.
