The word ‘Abd’ (servant/slave) in Islamic naming is reserved exclusively for pairing with Allah’s Names, because complete servitude and worship belong to Allah alone — this is the essence of Tawheed. Names like Abd-un-Nabi (‘servant of the Prophet’) or Abdul-Hussain (‘servant of Hussain’), while often used out of love and reverence for these revered figures, are considered impermissible by mainstream scholarship because they linguistically direct an act of servitude toward a created being rather than the Creator. Even the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) referred to himself as a servant of Allah, never one to be served in this sense — reinforcing why this distinction matters deeply in Islamic theology.
